Magnetic Particle (Dry, Wet, Visual Contrast, Florescent) Inspection (MPT)

Dry Visual Contrast Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) to determine the extent of cracking at the shoulder of a fitting. Dry MPI was used to avoid potential chemical contamination of the surfaces as SCC was considered to be likely in the failure environment.
How Does It Work?
An electrical current is run through a part creating a magnetic field. In conductive parts, this field is largely confined to the material. However, when there is a discontinuity in the part such as a crack or a void, the electrical and magnetic fields concentrate at that location and “leak” from the material. Magnetic particles then concentrate at these locations on the surface of the part, enabling detection of the defect.
