Die Penetrant Testing

Image
Die penetrant test (DPT) of the weld on a large pipe. The white areas are the locations where cracking of the weld HAZ occurred.
How Does It Work?
The surface of the material to be tested if first cleaned. Then, a die with a high wetting coefficient is applied to the material and penetrates cracks/voids. After a specified amount of time has passed, the excess die is wiped off the surface of the material, but remains in the cracks/voids. A developer is then applied to the sample, which draws the die out of the cracks/voids, highlighting them. The sample is then inspected to determine the locations of the defects.
